RACHEL BAILEY GALLOWAY

Mrs. Rachel E. Galloway died Saturday evening last (26 March 1892 - born 18 April 1828) at 8:35 o'clock. She was one of the pioneer women of the county, being 64 years of age and having spent nearly all of her life in this city. At the time of her death she lived near Mace. Deceased had suffered from a cancer since the death of her husband nearly 3 years ago, though the nature of her affliction was not known until one year ago, when the best medical aid was summoned with only the statement as a result: "We can do nothing for you!"

Loving hands and sad hearts then began to minister words of comfort and acts of relief that were in their power. 'Twas a long and sorrowful vigil. Toward the close death was daily expected. Neighbors, near and remote, did many acts of kindness and sympathy for the dying and the dejected living.

Patience, Christian faith and calm, sweet resignation to her Master's will beautifully marked her last days. They were an exemplification of what such a life does; it robs death of its sting, and the grave of its victory.

Oh heart, so torn with love and pain,
They trouble ne'ercan come again,
Oh feet, that tred life's stormy road
There's rest for you neath grassy sod.
Oh fragile body, weak and worn,
Rest thee, ah rest thee from life's storm.

And life of patience, life of toil,
Secure art thou from world's turmoil;
And hopeful spirit that did not falter,
Thou'rt home at last round thy fath'ers altar.
They suffering's o'er yet we know thou'rt nigh
Only for a time, good bye good bye.
